Inspiration for a Pillow Sham – Fabric Help Needed
Our good friend, Darlene, asked us if we would make her some pillow shams for her bed in a nautical theme. We would love to make pillow shams for her with a caveat that she had to give us a drawing or idea of what she is looking for. She complied to this request with this photo:
She said, “So this is what I’m thinking. Images like this using navy blue, white and grey. It could be 2 shams or just one sham in a king pillow length.” Oh yes, this is absolutely Darlene. It is not what I was picturing at all, but it will be fabulous when complete. The whole prospect of this project is thrilling to me.
Pillow Sham Fabric Help
I need help finding some white/gray fabric that resembles shiplap. I am sure there is some out there somewhere. The navy shapes will be easy to make and then will be appliquéd using a navy thread. Don’t you think? The white fabric surrounding the shiplap will also be easy – a nice white Bella. It’s just the background fabric that each nautical shape rests upon that will be harder to find. That’s where you come in, my quilting friends. What do you suggest? Have you seen some fabric that could pass for bead board or paneling? Weathered wood?
In case you have forgotten, or didn’t see the earlier post about her current pillow shams, these are going to be replaced. They look a bit like polka dots, especially from afar. They are actually sea shells, and they are not nautical enough for her (or me). So, now I’m off to find a pillow sham tutorial I like. I’ve made several quilted shams before usually with a ruffle all around. These shams definitely do not need ruffles – crisp and clean is called for here. Zipper or envelope fold – which do you think would be best here? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
