Light-Blue Batik Baby Quilt Finished
While this Light-Blue baby quilt made using some pretty batik fabrics is complete, it did not take the easy route. Or it wasn’t the easy route for me as far as quilting goes, but complete it is. Woohoo! This is our last finish for 2020 and also our last December OMG (one monthly goal) project for this year. We are definitely linking up this finish with Patty at Elm Street Quilts.
Back in May of this year, a coordinating Dark-Blue batik baby quilt was finished and shared. All of the fabrics for both of these quilts were ordered at the same time with two Irish Chain baby quilts in mind. We always seem to be a bit short of the quilts that are ideal for baby boys, so these two should change that.
The strips were cut for both quilts at the same time since the nine-patch blocks are essentially the same. Strip sewing made for quick work and the nine-patches were together lickety split.
A layout of the good ‘ole design wall ensued and before you know it, rows were stacked up for me to begin sewing.
The light-blue borders were added, it was layered with a cute backing, and the project was selected for our December OMG. That’s when the blissful feelings about this project started to wan.
It’s a Light-Blue Headache
Having just watched two different bloggers who offered videos of quilting nine-patch blocks with ruler work, that seemed like the natural progression and choice for this quilt. I poured over my selection of rulers like my life depended on it and then happily started quilting. Snap, crackle, and pop – my thread was breaking like crazy. I pulled the machine apart for a good cleaning, changed the needle, lowered the ruler foot, and rethreaded both the top and bobbin. Snap, crackle, pop, and skip – skipped stitches galore plus broken threads.
A timeout was given to both the project and me until after Christmas. Was that long enough? It didn’t matter because the end-of-month deadline was quickly approaching.
The breaking and skipping continued so I resorted to using a water soluble and a chalk marker to sketch the design. Out came the walking foot to replace the ruler foot and quilting was completed. This binding was added and it was quickly thrown into the washing machine to ensure the markings came out.
Light-Blue Batik Baby Quilt Ta-Da
Since we’re expecting a new baby boy to join the ranks with Dominic, Addison, and cousin, Colt, this will be perfect for him. Here it is, in all of its glory just freshly washed and dried. First, the cute backing . . .
. . . and the front side showing the quilting fairly well. Also, here it is with the dark-blue batik and baby Colt modeling for us.
