November OMG Finish – Evening Star Flimsy
Patty at Elm Street Quilters hosts a monthly link up to post a goal and then at the end of the month, share the finish. This is the November Finish Link-up website where we will share our post and flimsy picture. Here is the exact wording of our November OMG (one monthly goal):
We will set our November OMG to complete the Evening Star quilt top. I am confident we can meet this goal.
Yes, I had good cause to feel confident and we were able to complete the quilt top. Here is a little bit of history on the Evening Star quilt. The center of this block is comprised of nine-patch pieces and they were collected as extra blocks from baby quilts gifted over the years. It is fun to see blocks that were from Jaxson, Carson, Cecelia, Ruby, Gus, Elliott, Dominic and others.
In this quilt, the cute nine-patches are surrounded by a white star and blue background. Of course, we had a small mishap in October by running out of fabric or this would have been an October OMG! I shared a few pictures of blocks as we completed them. I worked on them in no particular order:
We decided to add a three inch finished size border all around the quilt top to give it a more finished look. Otherwise the star points would end right at the binding, and we weren’t sure we liked that look. I am rather surprised at the number of geometrical shapes that formed in the pattern with the squares and diamonds. The stars might have stood out better had we put a sashing strip around each block.
Evening Star Flimsy Complete:
Here is a closeup of some of the blocks. You can see that the white fabric is actually a white-on-white random dot. The nine-patch blocks are not all made with white fabrics – both the light blue and pink have a coordinating white dot with the highlight color for fun. As a result of branching out into new patterns, it seems we have gotten away from making nine-patch quilts as often as we have in the past.
Especially relevant is to decide how to quilt this. There are lots and lots of small areas so maybe I could try out some ruler work. I welcome any suggestions. Leave me your thoughts in the comments! This may be one of those quilts that are very hard for me to part with. It may or may not go in the Etsy shop.
