Tutorial – Charming Stars Quilt
Back in 2010 the Moda Bake Shop shared this tutorial called Charming Stars quilt. It was designed by Stefanie from Little Lady Patchwork. I am drawn to this quilt because a) it has stars, b) it is charm pack friendly, c) it is cute, and d) did I mention it has stars?!
The finished size of each block is 13.5″ x 13.5″ so that makes for a quick quilt! Stefanie said she was enamored with charmed packs and wanted to design a pattern that used them. Here are the ingredients:
- (3) charm packs + two extra 5″ squares
- (2 1/2 yards) of background fabric
- (1) yard for the borders
- (1/2) yard for the binding and the setting stones
- (4 1/2) yards for the backing
When the quilt is complete it measures approximately 68″ x 68″ using the above ingredients. Let’s take a peek at the layout before discussing the blocks.
I love that the blocks surrounding the stars are charm squares. No cutting for a good majority of the quilt. Snoballing the two corners of a charm square creates the white center feature star. You know that means you get a couple of ‘free’ triangles from this project. Another win-win!
My only addition to Stefanie’s instructions would be to add an additional stitching line 1/2″ from the drawn line for those free HSTs. Also I would use my laser light so that I didn’t have to drawn the lines at all.
Charmed Stars Variation
This other variation shared by Cora Quilts (the link for the Word Press blog is no longer active so I cannot share a link). You may see from the photo above that the second border was pieced. What an excellent way to use use scraps for an all-scrappy look for the entire quilt.
Have I tempted you to make this star quilt? I am! We have a fairly large stack of charm packs awaiting their sewing turn. The minimal cutting option is very appealing as well.
