Calico Hutch Quilt Shop, Hayward, MN
While traveling across Minnesota we saw a billboard on the interstate advertising for a HUGE quilt shop called Calico Hutch in Hayward, MN. The billboard was correct! It was a huge quilt shop, in business in the small town for over 30 years. It had an amazing selection of fabric and tons and tons of models. I can honestly say I don’t recall seeing a billboard for a quilt shop before! We were planning on stopping but if we hadn’t been, it would have prompted us to stop. The really cool header picture is a block-of-the-month made with wool. This picture does not do it justice at all:
This was one of the most organized (!!) shop we’ve ever been in. Right below each model was the fabric and pattern to make the model. No searching or assistance was required – you could grab, pay and go sew easily. They had a couple of long-arm machines set up in one of the side rooms, so I would assume they offer quilting services although I didn’t ask. They also offer classes, and had some choices that I would love to take if they weren’t a state away.
Calico Hutch Quilt Shop – Kudos!
I took a few shots of some of their models. This is a fabulous showcase of the same pattern made in different fabrics. It was hard to determine that it was all from the same pattern! And, as I mentioned earlier, right below the models was the same fabrics package for you as well as the pattern, and Linda helped us (sorry for the blurry picture):
I took a shot of these other two models made from the same pattern but different fabrics. It just showcases how much fabric can change the look:
I love all of those quilts and would have a hard time choosing which color to make either one. My eyes keep going back to the black and gray one though . . . Lastly, we picked up the pattern and fabric kit for this cute little 12′ square snowman:
I must have been on a snowman kick because in our first shop I was drawn to them too. This little guy was just too friendly looking and happy to pass up. I see a little bit of appliqué in my future. ~smile~

Can’t find your chicken casserole. Delicious!! Glad we stopped. Great shop & staff
If you know what pattern or technique you wanted to take a class on, you should talk to Karen @ Sew n Save. Perhaps she could organize a class for it.
Hi Ellen – that’s a great idea. ~smile~
