Expensive Iron
What kind of iron do you have? Do you like it? I found that my old workhorse of an iron, the Black & Decker that I had for years and years finally decided to stop streaming. It has served us well over the years, and it was nice and light. I had no idea what to replace it with, so I paid attention to what I saw others using. I am a huge fan of Youtube videos on quilting, and I noticed these cute yellow or pink irons. I like yellow . . . and pink for that matter . . .
So, I did a little investigating and found that the iron is called Oliso Smart Iron (https://www.oliso.com) and it was fairly costly. I never imagined I would pay more than $150 for AN IRON. Wow! I did in fact order it, and have had it for about six months. I have to say it was quite an adjustment to get used to it.
First of all, it was quite a LOT heavier than my older iron. Secondly, when you finished ironing you did not set it up on end but rather just take your hand off and it would raise itself in the not-in-use position. But I have found that those are easy changes to get adjusted to after a bit of time. It is nice that you can fill it with tap water instead of using distilled, and the steam settings are varied enough to meet any need. I went with the yellow version for no specific reason other than Jenny Doan (MSQC) used it in many of her videos. I ended up ordering it from Amazon and here is a link to exactly the model I received (including the free ironing board cover).
Are you still liking your iron! I’ve heard people say that the mechanism that elevates the iron when it is set down sometimes fails? And issues with that?
Wellllll, since you asked. No, I am not happy with it at all. I had to replace it once because it turned itself on whenever it felt like it. It was plugged in, set to the off position but it would randomly turn on. I had to pay $40 shipping and handling which is annoying. The replacement wrinkles the fabric each time when I start with the tip of the iron. If I come onto the fabric from the side, it is fine; but if I start ironing with the tip of the iron (the normal way to iron!!) it wrinkles. I haven’t had mechanism issues – it goes up and down fine, but I would NOT recommend it. And not the company on Amazon that sells them – they never replied to my requests to replace the iron. I had to contact the company itself. Aren’t you sorry you asked?! ~smile~ Roseanne
Actually, no I am not! I wondered because a while back I had contemplated purchasing a new iron and thought about buying one of those. With all the famous people using them I had figured they must be super wonderful. Now I’m 🤔 that they are probably using them because of sponsorship. 🙃 The reviews I came across were not positive and I got to use one at the group charity sewing day. I was not impressed and neither was the owner. She had similar issues to yours. Did you stick with the iron or did you purchase something else. 👏
Cindy,
I’ve stuck with it so far mostly because it’s so darn expensive. But just this week I was thinking I was crazy for not just getting a new one. ~sigh~ Whine – I don’t want to buy another iron. Waaa. I want this one to work like it should. Now I’ll do my research like I should have – I thought if Jenny and Pat Sloan use them, it must be great. You hit the nail on the head. ~smile~ Roseanne
Roseanne, my husband says sometimes buying stuff is like paying for college…when you are done all you have is a piece of paper and debt. Bummer! Those darn advertisers! Bigger is not always better. Watch out for yellow irons in the future. 😊❤️
