Fall Baby Quilt Fell Off the Radar

Sue was ambitiously hand quilting a beautiful baby quilt.  I shared an update a while ago, but it has kind of fallen off the radar.  Not actually, because it is sitting in a heap on Sue’s hassock in the living room.  Dominic pats it and even got his hand on the thread and unthreaded the needle.  No progress is being made on it, I am sad to report.  Why might that be?  How can we solve the issue?

Fall Baby Quilt – The Beginning

Sue new quilt

Remember this picture from June 1st?!!  I can’t believe it was that long ago.  She laid out of these pretties, we sewed them together and it became this flimsy.  We don’t actually have a picture that I can find, of course.  Mostly because school ended, then we went on a cruise, and finally I made us start 10 other different projects.  Fast forward to August 23rd, just four days before Sue had to return to school.  Apparently the summer flew by just as quickly as last month.

Fall Leaf Baby Quilting

Somewhere along the way, I changed the name of the quilt.  It is still rather confusing to me and perhaps it is because we just finished the Las Vegas Leaves quilt.  Today we’re talking about the leaf quilt not leaves.  Come on now, stick with me!  I found a few photos that were shared in August.

Here is the closest picture I have to a flimsy shot, showing the beautiful backing fabric.  Isn’t it just perfect?!!  Next to that are the template motifs Sue is or was randomly quilting.  She is/was also using different colored Gutermann threads to add some sparkle and interest.  Doesn’t that sound great?!!  I was like whoa, that will be SO PRETTY.

Fall Leaf Issue

So then, what exactly is the issue?  What’s the haps?  Why isn’t this quilt finished?  You know we’re not going to earn our PHD because of this quilt.  Do I have to be deceitful and not mention it?  That would totally work, I’m just saying.  No one else remembers this quilt or cares about it.  The issue is:  the thread keeps breaking or knotting.  Sue is knot having fun quilting this beauty.  (Did you catch that clever pun?!!)  She is doing something similar to this from our Bubbles quilt featuring overlapping circles.  Actually, the Olympics inspired these circles, which morphed into bubbles like champaign.

What is a quilter to do?  I offered two suggestions:  first, try different thread.  Either a different brand or different colors.  My second suggestion is to have us switch to machine quilting.  Can I replicate with a machine the hand quilting that has already occurred?  Can I randomly use her templates and switch thread colors as well?  Most importantly, would I still live to talk about it?  Think of all the thread ends to bury.  This is why it remains in a heap on her hassock.  Soon, it will be moved to the closet because we will want to decorate for the holidays.  Sue will be sick of looking at it, and I won’t earn a PHD to match her very much earned one.

A Better Offer a.k.a. Distraction

Baby Girl will be here in no time.  We decided that it is possible that she may come early and that our baby will need a stocking.  Sue started working on it last weekend.  Here’s a little peek!

BabyGirlStocking

Back to the original topic, any suggestions for Fall Leaf?  Tell Sue to buck up and get going?  Tell me to match her templates and thread changes, and have Sue bury the threads.  Throw caution to the wind, put it in the closet and don’t worry about the PHD.  Any of these may work.

I would try a different brand of thread. Or shove it in the closet now and try the different thread later. An alternative would be to possibly quilt straight or curvy parallel lines that run into the hand quilted leaves.

Is this for a show? Why are you tying and burying? Why not carefully back stitch when you have to, and quilt in from or out to the edge where you can and have nothing to tie or backstitch? Once it’s washed, it’s hard to see those even when you are looking for them!

OR you can turn your stitch length really down close to zero and start and stop with that, too. If you can go up and down in the same spot, several times, it’s supposed to keep it from coming out, but I can’t guarantee that, because I haven’t tried it.

Also try bees wax or Thread Heaven thread conditioner (I think it’s silicone based). If that doesn’t work, change the thread, machine quilt it, and move on.

Only the two of you can answer the question. No fobbing it off on us! LOL. Whatever you choose will be the right choice for you two right now. Which is more important, your sanity or an internet goal?

  4. LOL your post is jumping around just like your quilting and cross-stitch and cruise (no wait, you did that, but it was good alliteration) but as always I come away with a smile! Both the leaF and the leaVES quilts will be wonderful especially with your ever-widening FMQ skills!

I also suggest trying the wax. After a recommendation from another blog I used it while sewing on my bindings. I have never gone back. I find it reduces the knotting and may make the thread stronger. However, if it doesn’t speak to you or is not fun. Put it away for now. We have to do too many things we dislike already to have our hobbies in that category as well. I know you will be disappointed if you don’t get your PHD, but sometimes something has to give.

You made me chuckle just now! I’m positive that the person doing the PHD in 2018 challenge would not have remembered about this quilt if you hadn’t written a post about it! 🙂 As well, it’s an honour based challenge … but since the word is out … pull out some different thread and stitch on it for 15 minutes a day and soon it will be done!
    And Happy Quilting! 🙂

Sounds like different thread is needed. I hate when I have a lot of thread breakage. There is a solution! Hang in there!

  8. What Kathleen, Vicki, and Dione said. If none of that works, back it goes to the UFO pile for a time out. Then give Sue a glass of wine. She will need it. Haha!

  9. Wish I had words of wisdom to share….whatever you decide the quilt will be beautiful, amazing, and appreciated 🙂

  10. I hate when that happens! The thread is the problem, so you can try waxing or thread heaven or thread magic or switching to another thread. It is possible to “duplicate the hand quilting” kind of, sort of with an invisible thread and regular thread but I don’t think you will enjoy that! I feel like it just isn’t quilte fun to do. Is there any machine quilting on it? I might do the “reinforcing” of some of the large seams by stitch in the ditch and then do a few hand quilting bits, when you find the perfect new thread – which I think is what you will need to do. Sometimes doing that will just be the “motivation” to get you going on the quilt. Also, binge watch something silly while doing it…you get stuck on the show and don’t want to move…it helps me get motivated on something when I am just not ready. Wishing you both luck at finding the right solution!

  11. Whatever you decide, I’m sure it will be lovely!

Done is so much better than another UFO! At this point when I have lost interest in a project I put it as my OMG with the beautiful Patty at Elm Street Quilts. Is there any way that you can incorporate Machine quilting in some of the blocks – alternating or the middle third or a diamond or something that makes it look planned and gives Sue a leg up to persevere through a few more. It looks like it is going to be a cute quilt. Maybe you can machine quilt the coloured blocks and let Sue hand quilt in the highly visible muslin blocks. Keep at it, it is almost done and you are so close to earning your PHD. It is so much easier to finish school than have to start again. Jan

Has Sue tried waxing the thread? If that doesn’t work try another brand. And if that doesn’t work don’t worry about the PHD-try for it next year:) Quilting needs to be fun.

  14. I’ll share my real PhD with you. I’m not using it anyhow. Shove the quilt in the cupboard until it speaks to you. Or you desperately need it as a gift! lol xx 🙂
