Fall Baby Quilt Fell Off the Radar

Sue was ambitiously hand quilting a beautiful baby quilt.  I shared an update a while ago, but it has kind of fallen off the radar.  Not actually, because it is sitting in a heap on Sue’s hassock in the living room.  Dominic pats it and even got his hand on the thread and unthreaded the needle.  No progress is being made on it, I am sad to report.  Why might that be?  How can we solve the issue?

Fall Baby Quilt – The Beginning

Remember this picture from June 1st?!!  I can’t believe it was that long ago.  She laid out of these pretties, we sewed them together and it became this flimsy.  We don’t actually have a picture that I can find, of course.  Mostly because school ended, then we went on a cruise, and finally I made us start 10 other different projects.  Fast forward to August 23rd, just four days before Sue had to return to school.  Apparently the summer flew by just as quickly as last month.

Somewhere along the way, I changed the name of the quilt.  It is still rather confusing to me and perhaps it is because we just finished the Las Vegas Leaves quilt.  Today we’re talking about the leaf quilt not leaves.  Come on now, stick with me!  I found a few photos that were shared in August.

Here is the closest picture I have to a flimsy shot, showing the beautiful backing fabric.  Isn’t it just perfect?!!  Next to that are the template motifs Sue is or was randomly quilting.  She is/was also using different colored Gutermann threads to add some sparkle and interest.  Doesn’t that sound great?!!  I was like whoa, that will be SO PRETTY.

Fall Leaf Issue

So then, what exactly is the issue?  What’s the haps?  Why isn’t this quilt finished?  You know we’re not going to earn our PHD because of this quilt.  Do I have to be deceitful and not mention it?  That would totally work, I’m just saying.  No one else remembers this quilt or cares about it.  The issue is:  the thread keeps breaking or knotting.  Sue is knot having fun quilting this beauty.  (Did you catch that clever pun?!!)  She is doing something similar to this from our Bubbles quilt featuring overlapping circles.  Actually, the Olympics inspired these circles, which morphed into bubbles like champaign.

What is a quilter to do?  I offered two suggestions:  first, try different thread.  Either a different brand or different colors.  My second suggestion is to have us switch to machine quilting.  Can I replicate with a machine the hand quilting that has already occurred?  Can I randomly use her templates and switch thread colors as well?  Most importantly, would I still live to talk about it?  Think of all the thread ends to bury.  This is why it remains in a heap on her hassock.  Soon, it will be moved to the closet because we will want to decorate for the holidays.  Sue will be sick of looking at it, and I won’t earn a PHD to match her very much earned one.

A Better Offer a.k.a. Distraction

Baby Girl will be here in no time.  We decided that it is possible that she may come early and that our baby will need a stocking.  Sue started working on it last weekend.  Here’s a little peek!

Back to the original topic, any suggestions for Fall Leaf?  Tell Sue to buck up and get going?  Tell me to match her templates and thread changes, and have Sue bury the threads.  Throw caution to the wind, put it in the closet and don’t worry about the PHD.  Any of these may work.
