Make Ours a Double February OMG
February was a dotty kind of month for us in several ways. We were seeing Swiss Dots all over the place while we wrapped up our February OMG. The link to Patty’s linky finish party on Elm Street Quilts is open and we are happy to share. While this project wasn’t on our First Quarter Finish Along we dove headfirst into completing this quilt top.
February OMG Change Up
For ages we have admired this Make Mine A Double quilt block. At first, we had trouble finding the white with red Swiss dot fabric. Pushed to a back burner, it found itself in the limelight when the Sand Swiss dot fabric was obtained for our Color of the Month Block Connection. Thank you, thank you Riley Blake!
We ordered these luscious fabrics, and developed a plan. There are only 28 days to bring this quilt top to fruition.
Modifications to Make Ours
Certainly the pattern link above was our inspiration without a doubt. We chose to make HSTs instead of flying geese. Our test block showed us another area we chose to change:
The strip in the first and last row is no longer a 2.5″ square and a 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangle. For one less seam, it has been replaced with a 2.5″ x 6.5″ rectangle. Once we decided those changes worked for us, Sue set about getting everything cut for me. Chain piecing ensued, making quick work of the HSTs for the remaining 10 blocks. Most of you know there was an oops block in there, too. Right around block four, plus we determined we didn’t have enough fabric.
Make Ours Big Enough
Initially, 12 blocks sounds like plenty of blocks for a baby quilt. Then we thought we should and could add sashing to make the quilt top bigger.
Since there was so much red in the fabric overall, we used the red bandana fabric sashing vertically in 2.5″ strips. For additional length, the navy strips are 3.5″ wide and they run horizontally. I am so thrilled with this bandana fabric – it looks SO cute.
Make Our a Quilt Top
Ta-Da! A quilt top eeked out for our February OMG project. Sewing just wrapped up last night which explains the semi-dark photo. It may be the end of February but the winter is far from over in these parts!
Now we need to find just the perfect backing, and those little paisleys in the bandana prints are inspiring me for the quilting motif.
