Pieces SAL Modern Lost Goslin Block
Last Thursday (13th), the second block from Melva’s sew-along Pieces From the Past was released. This is a nicely paced sew-along with three weeks between block releases. The finished quilt is a Kansas City Sampler and we’ll be sewing along until the last block is released in March 2021. It’s not too late to join in if you’d like to. Melva has a link-up on her post above so you can see other blocks as they are shared. The link-up is available until March 4th.
Modern Fabric Choices
We are joining the sew-along using these modern fabrics from the Lauren Burch Basics Prism collection. They have such nice deep rich tones and they balance well with the Bella white solid. The first block is called Signature Block, and we haven’t quite yet decided what to add to the blank center square. Maybe R&S 2021 or something original like that. HAHA!
After auditioning several other choices, I sure do like these fabrics that we settled on. Now for The Lost Goslin fabric choices . . .
Modern Goslin Choices
Sue and I always have a fun discussion over which fabrics to use. Personally, I think this selection is the most lengthy process involved in any quilting project and the most important one. Your fabric choices can easily make or break a quilt, and I have broken a few quilts by my own dumb selections.
Here’s our choices for block number two. The green is a little bit tie-dyed-inspired, don’t you think? The last Project Runway was a whole episode about tie-dyed fabrics; therefore this is a PR nod. By the way, Project Quilting this week has a Birds In the Air challenge that we’re skipping. Sue hates birds in all forms . . . even though I suggested flying geese it was landing on deaf ears. I’m allowed to have a hummingbird feeder though – I didn’t ask – I just did it.
Modern Goslin Process
Cutting and sewing ensued now that we had our fabric selection.
Yes, I am showing off our new wool mat again. I love how crisp the HSTs are after ironing on it.
Modern Goslin Ta-da
On its own, I am loving our finished block . . . but then look at it with the first block!

That green tie-dye looking fabric is just beautiful. I really like your modern take on this sew-along.
Crimson and Purple. Even the green is sparkling.
Very regal!!! You are making a quilt fit for royalty!!! And the seam allowances seem just right.
Looking good Roseanne!
That Goslin is stunning – like pouring the ocean into a piece of fabric!!! Lovely squares, my dear.
So bright!!! This will be an interesting make.
This is going to be a stunning quilt, Roseanne! Your fabric choices are fantastic!
Happy Quilting! 🙂
Pretty block! And, wow, I love that green fabric!
Hello Roseanne, You and Sue, are pretty darn excellent at choosing fabrics for quilts. If you are still even slightly unhappy with this block, you do have an entire Fat Quarter Bundle to choose something else from and see what your thoughts are then. I printed the first block and with some stuff going on, I know I can not do this right now. I am looking forward to all of your blocks being shown to us! Have a fantastic day!
I downloaded the first 2 blocks but haven’t actually made them yet. I need to decide on what fabric I want to use and then I’ll catch up. I like the pace of this SAL too. I don’t feel so much pressure.
Ginny
I love both of your blocks and they look good together too. Will all your blocks have the same blue batik?
Indeed it looks tie dyed it is absolutely gorgeous, great choices.
The green and blue look fabulous together!
Pretty blocks – I like that green/blue fabric!
Pretty fabric choice, Roseanne! I agree that fabric choice is a very important part of making a quilt.
Love your blocks – very very pretty!
I am following Melva’s Pieces from the Past. I am not making the blocks, I love the stories that she shares! Both of your blocks look terrific, Roseanne!
I love birds! I love the carefree living and singing of the song birds…I love the power and majesty of the birds of prey. I love the egotism and pride of the males during mating season.
And I had better get off of the pc and get ready for work. Ha, ha!
