Pieces SAL Modern Signature Block
Last Thursday (23rd), the very first block from Melva’s sew-along Pieces From the Past was released. This is a nicely paced sew-along with three weeks between block releases. The finished quilt is a Kansas City Sampler and we’ll be sewing along until the last block is released in March 2021. I’ll start at the end, and work backward from our nearly finished block.
Modern Fabric Choices
As soon as Melva announced the sew had received permission to host the sew-along, I picked out these modern fabrics. They are from the Lauren Burch Basics Prism collection and they have such nice deep rich tones. Yummy!
Modern Rejects #1-4
Sue and I had quite a discussion over which fabrics to use for the first block. Rather like Goldilocks, each pairing had some flaws and was ultimately discarded.
The left pairing or reject #1 was Too Viking, while the right was Too Bears for reject #2. Reject #3 was Too Patriots or Tom Brady, if you will, while #4 or the final reject was just plain Too U.G.L.Y together.
Modern Choice #5

Ahh, yes! Pretty!
Cutting and sewing ensured now that we had our fabric selection.
This pressing photo was shared on Instagram and on Tuesday’s To-Do list, showing off our new wool mat. Once those four pieces were together the block was nearly together. After all is said and done, we aimed for a modern take for this first block in the Kansas City sampler sew-along treat. We’ll figure out the center “signature” component soon.

Hi Roseanne! Your modern quilt block is very mod indeed ! I love the bright Color pallet. As you know, brights are my favorite;). I am looking forward to a very bright sewing year!!
I love these fabrics and this is another of my favourite blocks! 😉 Carol
OMG, you are too funny!!! Too Tom Brady!!! LOL. Love the block you ended up with.
These colors are just perfect! Fun seeing the method to the madness!
Hello Roseanne, The fabrics that you and Sue chose for this block are beautiful together. I wish that I had those exact fabrics and I would make my block the same. LOL. Yet, being a copy cat is not a nice thing! We were all taught that, I do believe. I did get the pattern printed out….so I have started. Hee-hee-hee. With the fabrics you have chosen for this interesting Sew Along, I look forward to seeing each and every one of your blocks! Have a marvelous day!
Love those fabrics in the block.

You made a good color choice for the block (just say no to Vikings colors – hehe) and your block looks really good!
