Stars Galore Mug Rug for Blog Hop
For our stop on the blog hop hosted by Carol at Just Let Me Quilt, we designed a little mug rug called Stars Galore Mug Rug. The blog hop started on May 21 and runs through today, May 25th. Thank you Carol for organizing this fun hop! Many of the participants will have giveaways so you won’t want to miss any of the stops, and I share a list of them at the end of this post.
This is our second free pattern for a mug rug. (Click on the name if you are interested in our Checkerboard Heart mug rug pattern from the February blog hop.) We decided that this is the perfect occasion for us to share at long last the completion of our Evening Star quilt. The poor thing has been awaiting my inspiration for quilting, and that came way back in March with this Fluffer Nutter table runner. Thanks to Cindy for sharing closeup pictures of her quilting, as the lightbulb finally went on for me. Here is a photo of this quilt that is very star inspired:
Stars Galore
I did my usual method of designing, on a post-it note at work during my lunch break. I brought it home and handed it to Sue, saying that we needed to make a little flag mug rug. She pulled some red and blue fabrics and started cutting them. Sue also did the sewing on our piece. Here is the squared-up project before layering it for quilting.
A Starry Start
We knew that we wanted to add some additional star pieces to the navy area. Even though it had stars in the fabric, what would a star blog hop be without lots of stars? I found the star shape in Word, sized it to about one inch and cut it out after printing it. The next step was to trace it on the wrong side of the white-on-white star fabric. We didn’t bother with an iron-on fusible product as the placement didn’t matter that much.
Next, it was time for layering and quilting. A scrap piece of batting and backing fabric was used, just slightly bigger than the flag piece. I used a wavy stitch on the red and white stripes. The white stars were placed and then buttonholed around them. The final step was to add some FMQ small star shapes in and around the appliquéd pieces.

Love the flag mug rug!!
This is a great little mug rug. The addition of the extra stars and the star quilting take it up a notch and it’s as others have said…just in time.
Thanks for sharing your cute mug rug!
Another cute mug rug that is on my list to make. thanks
Finally, it’s your day! The mug rug is cute and so timely. I like the wavy quilting on the stripes, because it gives it a feeling of the flag waving. That wonderful quilt! It was worth waiting for your inspiration to hit hard. Beautiful quilting finish. I think that quilt would continue to grow on one, over time.
Great mug rug very pretty ty for freebee… happyness04431@yahoo.com
Your quilt is great as is the star struck table runner but I’m a mug rug junkie and yours are terrific.
That is so nice – a great piece to use for decorating around the holidays.
So pretty Roseanne! ❤️
Great mug rug.
Perfect for upcoming holidays!
What a great idea – post-it-note planning. I adore the cute flag mugrug! I have a friend who used to have a band and do USO tours. She would adore this mugrug! Just in time for her and her friends. It’s difficult to find the perfect project for her – she’s picky. I think this is perfect. Thanks for participating and the inspiration.
Your mug rug is perfect for the blog hop and for the summer holidays, too! I l9ve how you and Sue work together, Roseanne. What fun that must be!
Love your star mug rug. What a great gift it would make. I think we all start with an idea and a post it note. Mine is in the car on my long commute. lol Great post!

This is just perfect! And we have something in common, as I do many of my preliminary design sketches on sticky notes during lunch. (Or on a tiny notepad when I’m stuck in traffic.) Happy quilting! Sharon
I love your star quilt! My favorite parts are the nine patch centers and the dark blue background. Love the patriotic mug rug also. Perfect timing for the holiday.
So cute and perfectly timed to be used for the Memorial Day weekend.
Nice mug rug–perfect for the hop and the coming holidays. Thanks for sharing!
What a cute idea, a flag mug rug. Nine patch in the center of stars, love it.
I love your method of planning a project…a post-it note. LOL That’s my kind of planning! It turned into a perfect little mug rug that is beautiful and so patriotic. Your Evening Star quilt looks amazing and I’m glad you got inspired to finish it. It’s amazing! Thank you, Roseanne and Sue, for playing along today and making my day a lot brighter. xo
