Tutorial – Charm Pack Woodruff Quilt
A quilt that uses charm packs to make it? Yup, this tutorial has it. And it also has a really cool trick to keep directional fabrics in check and going the same way for your blocks. Nicola Dodd shared her quilt recently on the Moda Bake Shop and I knew I needed to share it with you. Nicola shares some really great tips that you should check out!
I just love the fabric choices in this quilt. The best part is it starts out as a basic four-patch from the charm pack and neutral pieces. You will sew a patterned and neutral 5″ square together. You will then sew two pairs together. It should look something like the first picture below:
Charm Pack Block Shortcut:
Then following Nicola’s instructions you will cut from the right side 2.5″. After that, you will cut 2.5″ from the top:
Isn’t that the easiest way you have ever seen to make sashing and cornerstones for a block???!! And, you can easily see that if you fabric was directionally patterned this cutting would keep all blocks going in the same direction. What a cool technique Nicola has shared!
You now alternate the blocks with a 9″ background square. The layout is 7 squares by 9 rows. The quilt finishes at approximately 59.5″ x 76.5″.
Charm Pack Quilt Details
2 Charm Packs (use 64 pieces – you will have leftovers)
1 yard neutral fabric (64 – 5″ squares)
2 yards background fabric (31 – 9″ squares)
3.75 x yards backing fabric
0.5 x yard binding fabric
Instead of the 1 yard of neutral fabric, you could use low-volume squares from the charm packs and supplement with additional neutral fabric squares you cut. Doesn’t this look beautiful with the gingham fabric in a silver check that Nicola used:
Will you be adding this to your “to-do” list soon? It is considered an easy pattern, and I can see that it would come together very quickly. Nicola also offers a hand quilting suggestion that could also be used for machine quilting as well.
