Tutorial Denim Pinwheel Quilt
Here is another tutorial I share with you today that I found just by happenstance and luck. I am a huge fan of the pinwheel block in all different forms, and this is no exception. The Denim Pinwheel quilt was offered by Purl Soho in 2013, but it still share-worthy today. Just the name alone drew me in for a look because it contained the word coupled with denim. Hmm, that is an interesting combination don’t you think? This tutorial makes a throw size quilt which just may be the perfect size, or they also give you yardage amounts for other sizes. These pictures are directly from Purl Soho’s tutorial.
Denim and Pinwheels
This tutorial uses fabric by Robert Kaufman called Railroad Denim in a variety of colors, and that fabric is still available. Another interesting thing to note is that both sides of the fabrics are used, creating additional color choices. Isn’t this just a design that you might really go wild with and let your creativity flow?!
Here is a close up of one portion of the quilt, showing the delicious denim pinwheel. It goes without saying that these fabrics are directional and you would need to mindful of that. I’m sure you know the drill for this quilt, as you are just making HSTs (half square triangles) and quite a few of them but who’s counting?! One thing not mentioned in this tutorial is the ironing of the seams before cutting and trimming begins. This might be a good case for using the pressing-the-seams-open argument. I would suspect that would greatly cut down on the bulk in the center of each pinwheel, but use your own best judgment.
Finishing Off A Pinwheel
I rarely see this in tutorials but a suggestion for quilting is given! As someone with quilter’s paralysis, I truly appreciate that. Here is a picture of their suggestion but check out the tutorial for more details.
One last final thought, and I’m sure you’ve already considered it. Doesn’t everyone have a stash of old jeans that you’ve been meaning to use for a quilt? Jeans that you’ve grown out of, some that friends gave you, etc. are all gathering dust somewhere. I know we do, and we’ve even made a large, heavy lap quilt for my niece a while ago. I recall much of the denim we used was different weights and colors but we never thought of pinwheels. Perhaps some of that stash might work for a quilt like this, OR supplement a fabric purchase.
Is this a quilt you might make? Are you PINing it for later and further thought? I can’t say if we will make this one day or not, but we DO have the denim fabric already. If you make this, please let us know! Our other Linky Parties can be found by clicking the link or along the sidebar on our website for more quilting fun – check out what our friends are up to. Like/follow us on our Facebook page and you can share your photos of what you’re working on. We would love to see them!
Cool!
This is nice, but if you’re looking to make a quilt from old jeans check out this link! I have two tops completed and waiting for me to figure out what to put on the back. http://iquiltforfun.blogspot.com/2013/06/what-great-pattern.html
Pinwheel quilts never grow old. They are so versatile, because you can put pinwheels in so many quilt blocks in place of a square, etc. I just wore out a pair of denim capris (my quilting capris) — hmm. I might have to cut them up for a quilt!
And all her stripes match….amazing.
